Scope and Contents

The Sheffield Neighborhood Association (SNA) records document the activities of the organization. The most substantial series of the collection documents the Garden Walk. The Sheffield Garden Walk is an annual event which began in 1969 to raise money for the community. Materials in the collection also document various beatification projects in the neighborhood such as Trebes Park which was renovated in 1992 with funds from the Garden Walk and the Dorothy Melamerson Trust.

Biographical / Historical

The Sheffield Neighborhood Association (SNA) was formed in 1958. The official purpose of SNA as stated in its by-laws is: “to improve the conditions of life, work, recreation, health, and safety; to foster and develop a neighborhood plan, and to aid, assist, and sponsor neighborhood activities in the area bounded by Halsted Street, Fullerton Avenue, Lakeview Avenue, and Armitage Avenue.”

The records of the Sheffield Neighborhood Association are arranged in nine series: 1. Publications; 2. Administration Files; 3. History and Background of Sheffield; 4. Financial Files; 5. Events; 6. Committee Files; 7. Urban Renewal; 8. Photographs; 9. Garden Walk. The Publications series is arranged chronologically and the other eight series are arranged both alphabetically and chronologically.
