DePaul University Office of Advancement records
Scope and Contents
The Office of Advancement records include correspondence and memoranda, reports, promotional materials, meeting minutes, press releases, publications, and financial data related to the Office of Advancement's role in university development, fundraising, and alumni and public relations. Records created prior to 1970 reflect the relationship between President Comerford J. O'Malley, the Board of Trustees, Arthur Schaefer, and other fundraising personnel. Schaefer, who served as Director of Public relations from 1946-1955 and as Director (later Vice President) of Development and Public Relations from 1955-1980, is a distinct presence through much of the collection's topical series. Additional accessions introduced materials related to Herbert Newman's tenure leading the office as Vice President of Development and Public Relations from 1980 through at least 1992.

Biographical / Historical
The DePaul University Office of Advancement (formerly the Department of Development and Public Relations) focuses on fundraising, alumni relations, and university development and expansion. For many years, it also served as an office of public relations for the university; this function is now the responsibility of the Office of Public Relations and Communications.

Note: Unprocessed materials have yet to be added to this collection, accession 1997.36. These records first arrived at the Archives as part of a large accession, 1990.40. Although the material was in almost total disarray, we have tentatively established that the earlier records, before 1970, comprised files from the office of Rev. Comerford J. O'Malley, President of the University from 1944 to 1964, and Chancellor until 1980. The records created between 1970 and 1986 probably originated in the files of Rev. Austin F. Minogue, C.M., during the time he served as Associate Director of Development, specifically Alumni and Friends (1970-1986). Material was later added from additional files transferred by the Office of Advancement.
