DePaul University Office of LGBTQA Student Services records
Scope and Contents
The files contain administrative, planning, academic, event, and publicity records from DePaul's Office of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Questioning and Ally Student Services. These items document the Center's aim to provide awareness and resources for LGBTQ students. Syllabi, publicity, and other materials related to DePaul's LGBTQ academic program, which was the first of its kind in a Catholic institution, are also included. The collection also contains minutes, fliers, and publicity from past LGBTQ groups at DePaul such as Pride and Spectrum, and digital newsletters from the Office of LGBTQA Student Services. In addition, the collection includes numerous media files that reflect DePaul's encounters with both controversial and progressive LGBTQ issues. Inclusion of these materials sheds light on the challenge DePaul faces in mediating its role as both a religious and academic institution. Furthermore documentation from various Chicago-land LGBTQ community organizations demonstrates the Center's aim to connect LGBTQ students to resources in the wider Chicago community. Special note should be made to the report in Box 1 titled "Proposal to Establish an LGBTQA Resource Center at DePaul University," as it provides a concise history of the Office's establishment.

Biographical / Historical
In the fall of 2003, an Ad Hoc Committee of students, staff, faculty and alumni formed to evaluate and assess the needs of DePaul's Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) student population. The committee held regular meetings and engaged in an active dialogue around issues concerning LGBTQ student safety, visibility, and access to resources on campus. The committee found that historically there had been a number of LGBTQ student and university resources. These groups include Pride (1999-2003) Spectrum (2003-2004), University Ministry's GLBT Twilight Retreat, and the Counseling Center's various support groups. However, no lasting student or university resources endured at DePaul. In addition, the Committee found that DePaul's responses to the needs, issues, and concerns of LGBTQ students, staff, and faculty in terms of support services, resources, programming, and curriculum had often been inconsistent and required further development to adequately support DePaul's LGBTQ community. In response to these findings the Committee proposed the establishment of the Office of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Questions and Allies (LGBTQA) Student Services. Founded in 2004, this center is also known as the LGBTQ Resource Center. Between 2004 and 2014 LGBTQA Student Services reported to the Dean of Students, and in October 2014 began reporting to the Center for Intercultural Programs. The mission of the Office of LGBTQA Student Services is to facilitate visibility, support, resources, education and awareness around LGBTQ issues and concerns. The specific aim of the Office is to provide a safe environment for LGBTQ students so they may gain support, understanding, and acceptance in all their experiences at DePaul University.
