Biographical / Historical

DePaul University's American Studies program integrates the study of history, literature, geography, media, politics, popular culture, art and religion in order to critically analyze American society, culture, institutions, and intellectual traditions. The American Studies program offers either a major or a minor with the option of one of five concentrations: Popular Culture and Media Studies; Social and Literary Movements; Politics, Institutions and Values; Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies; and Material Culture and the Built Environment. Previous concentrations related to specific ethnicities, including African-American Studies, European-American Ethnicity, and Latino Studies have since been reestablished in related departments. For several years, the American Studies program maintained a tradition of one "theme quarter" per year related to an aspect of American life. Examples of theme quarter topics include Idealism in America, the Asian Pacific American Experience, and the Jewish Experience in Modern America. The program sponsored events and created special courses to fit the chosen theme.
