Biographical / Historical

The DePaul University School of Nursing was established in 1947 as the Department of Nursing, under the direction of founding chair Florence Finette. Speaking with an interviewer in the 1980s, Finette said: "There were very few baccalaureate programs in nursing in the country in 1947 when DePaul University was asked to initiate [a program] for registered nurses. The program was started with the essential liberal arts components and a major in nursing, which was strictly functional. It was a one-woman faculty with assistance of part-time instructors." The program was a success, and six years later DePaul established the first graduate program for Nursing in the state of Illinois. In 1966, the Nursing Department moved from the Loop campus to the Levan Building on the Lincoln Park campus; that same year, a generic baccalaureate program in Nursing was established at DePaul. The department continued to expand in the decades the followed, introducing night classes for registered nurses and specialized areas of study such as neurology and anesthesiology. In 1978, Grace Peterson founded the DePaul Honor Society in Nursing and served as its first president. She continued to support the Society following its charter as the Zeta Sigma chapter of the national nursing honor society Sigma Theta Tau in 1982. The purpose of Sigma Theta Tau is "to recognize excellence, to foster high professional standards, and to strengthen commitment to the ideals and purposes of the nursing profession." In 2011, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences split into the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the College of Science and Health. In response to a growing demand for health care professionals, DePaul established the School of Nursing the same year. It is part of the College of Science and Health.
