Biographical / Historical

The Office of Community and Government Relations (CGR) acts as DePaul University's liaison to state and federal government and serves as a link between the University and the communities surroundings its campuses. At the state and federal levels, it monitors legislation that impacts higher education, maintains relationships with state senators, governors, and representatives, and lobbies for the university's interests. At the local level, CGR has developed civic and community partnerships as well as a Neighborhood Advisory Committee in Lincoln Park to respond to the needs of the community and assist with long-range university planning. CGR has existed in various incarnations since its inception in 1998. Founded as CGR, the office merged with the university’s Office of External Affairs in 2005 and became known as the Office of Community, Government and International Affairs (CGIA). As CGIA, the role of the office expanded to include developing international partnerships and facilitating communication between the university and partner institutions in other countries. J.D. Bindenagel served as Vice President of CGIA from 2005-2012 and was heavily involved in its activities. On July 1, 2012, CGR ceased its international functions and reverted to its original name.
